What You’ll Learn In This Blog

Introduction

Black skincare isn’t new, it’s foundational. Long before “barrier repair” and “hyperpigmentation treatments” became trending terms, melanin-rich communities were creating skincare routines rooted in science, protection, and necessity. This Black History Month, we’re spotlighting how Black skincare pioneered many of the industry’s newest “innovations” from inclusive SPF to inflammation-safe actives.

Here’s what’s changing now

A Few Black-Owned Skin Care Brands You Should Know

1. Buttah Skin: Actor and entrepreneur Dorion Renaud founded Buttah Skin to bring luxury skincare to melanin-rich skin. Frustrated by the lack of representation in high-end beauty, he created a line that nourishes, protects and celebrates all skin tones. The Buttah Gentle Cleanser is a mild, sulfate-free gel that does that just. Suitable for all skin types, it cleanses, soothes and lightly exfoliates, all while maintaining your skin’s natural pH level.

    2. Urban Hydration: Urban Hydration grew out of co-founder Psyche Terry’s passion project: helping a local non-profit to raise money by selling handmade clean beauty products. After getting rave reviews from friends and family, she spun the idea into a full-fledged skincare brand. Urban Hydration Bright & Balanced Micellar Facial Cleansing Water is a soothing micellar water that removes makeup without the need for rubbing.

    3. Keys Soulcare: In 2020, Alicia Keys debuted Keys Soulcare, inspired by her skin journey and love of ancient rituals. Everything was developed with a dermatologist using only clean ingredients. Her star product is Keys Soulcare Promise Serum, a multitasking serum that helps to control oil, reduce the look of pores, hydrate, calm irritation, and brighten your skin.

    4. Hyper Skin:   Hyper Skin was started by Desiree Verdejo, who couldn’t find anything to address the acne and post-acne hyperpigmentation that she battled while pregnant. After two years of development, she came up with a formula that worked, and has now expanded into a full product line. Her star product is Hyper Skin Hyper Even Brightening Dark Spot Vitamin C Serum  which is a potent 15% vitamin C serum that targets pigmentation and signs of aging.

    5. Klur: Klur began after esthetician and formulator Lesley Thornton saw a gap in the market for clean skincare products to treat diverse skin conditions and ethnicities. Everything in her minimalistic range is gentle, multi-purpose and sustainably-made. For long-lasting hydration and barrier support, consider Klur Immersion Serum Concentrate. This combines aloe, hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan, sodium PCA and panthenol to replenish lost moisture.

    6. BeautyStat with Ron Robinson :BeautyStat is a science-led skincare brand founded by cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson, built around clinical efficacy and ingredient transparency. The brand is best known for its patented stabilization of pure vitamin C, delivering high performance without irritation. Its hero product, Universal C Skin Refiner, set a new benchmark for brightening and antioxidant skincare.
